In June 2010, while traveling between four countries: first Korea, then Canada, France, and Serbia; the Football World Cup was happening on daily TV from Soweto, South Africa. Moving from country to country, I watched people gathering around televisions in restaurants and stores, and celebrating through the streets. I saw rapt faces everywhere, cheering and booing, fully engaged with the various matches of National Football. What a compelling vision the teamwork provided for each country, even to the small children excitedly practicing football and soccer in the parks.
Notice, friends, that what we do with coaching, especially Solution Focused Coaching, is to assist people to create games worth playing and then build the motivation to do them.
What is the power of a game to engage our compelling vision and motivation so thoroughly? Even difficult jobs don’t seem like work whenever we love and enjoy doing what we do. We easily turn the impossible into the possible.
A game creates a vortex of engagement. We work seriously while not taking ourselves too seriously. I suggest that we now need coaching style games to focus the whole planet on the important life concerns we humans now share! We need to incite people to engage and to create their own human development system. We need true leadership games which are clear and compelling, so people naturally want to get engaged, where the rules make sense, and with steps that are doable.
It is time for us to create a ‘World Cup’ for leaders creating a world that works for everyone. We can build a strong movement with an exciting vision of possibility for us all.
Seven years later the World Cup for Coaches is well established and the World Game International Meetings draw hundreds. Most important people are declaring themselves players, creating legacy initiatives and moving the ‘ball’ in many key areas.
